The track and field team began the postseason with the KingCo championship, hoping to springboard contenders into the SeaKing district meet next week, the qualifying event for the state meet.

After the first day of the KingCo 3A-2A meet on Wednesday, the girls team was in first place with 39 points and the boys team sat in fourth with 23 points. The top four finishers in the finals of each event earned places at the SeaKing district meet on May 20 and May 22.

Tomorrow’s finals will take place at Eastlake High School, beginning at 1 p.m.

The Islander boys’ lone first-place finish on day one of the meet came in the long jump as senior Evan Dawson leaped 20 feet, 10 inches.

Other qualifiers for the district meet include: Tyler Benster and Evan Sadler, in the 1,600-meter event. Evan Sadler finished fourth and Benster had a third-place finish in the race.

In the boys preliminary events, qualifying for the finals — which take place tomorrow afternoon — are: Kurtis Rosengreen and Nicholas Sinclair, in the 100-meter dash; and Dawson, Jeff Lindquist and Rosengreen each earned spots in the 200-meter finals. Christopher Gelon and Aaron Azose will run the 400-meter dash for the Islanders, while Evan Sadler, Pete Fisher, Quinn Chase and Colin Strong will help stack the field in the 800-meter finals. Bryce Borer and Elliot Blasich will take part in the 110-meter hurdles finals, while Brad Idzik and Blasich will take to the track in the 300-meter hurdle finals.

Qualifiers from the girls team to the district meet include: Phoebe Merritt and Lindsay Benster, in the 1,600-meter race. The duo finished in first and second place at the KingCo meet. Jordan Esfeld had a fourth-place finish to grab the final qualifying spot in the girls long jump. Caryl Andersen, a freshman at MIHS, had a second-place javelin finish with a throw of 97 feet and 9 inches.

In the girls preliminary events, qualifying for tomorrow’s finals are: Janelle Chow, Maddison Crothamel and Esfeld, in the 100-meter dash. In the 200-meter race, Alisha Waggoner made the finals, as did Kara Lungmus and Lauren Sadler in the 400-meter race. Gabi Goyette, Julia Stafford, Merritt and Haley Piper all qualified in the 800-meter race for the finals. Cora Miller and Jordan Peralta made the 100-meter hurdles final event, while Miller also qualified for the 300-meter hurdle finals.
