A break in a water main at Mercer Island’s Shorewood Heights Apartments last Thursday evening affected many apartments across several buildings.

According to a person who answered the phone at the Shorewood office who only gave his name as Tucker, the reason that the pipe broke was likely because of age. “It was not overloaded nor was there any construction near the break,” he said.

According to resident Nicole Howard Radliff, several buildings were without water on and off for a couple of days.

The water system at Shorewood is not owned or maintained by the City of Mercer Island. When the development was built, it negotiated its own arrangement with the City of Seattle Public Utilities for its water supply. City of Mercer Island maintenance people were contacted and offered their assistance. Shorewood hired a private contractor to repair the break.

The break has been fixed.
