The results for the August primary were certified on Aug. 16, and Islanders and incumbents Tana Senn and Judy Clibborn, both Democrats, won their respective races in the 41st District.

For the state Senate seat, Steve Litzow (R-Mercer Island) trailed Democrat challenger Lisa Wellman, despite appearing to be beating her in early returns.

Wellman, also from Mercer Island, earned 48.73 percent (14,800 votes) to Litzow’s 47.22 percent (14,344 votes). Libertarian Bryan Simonson trailed the two with 3.91 percent.

Litzow has served in the Legislature since 2010 and chairs the Senate Early Learning and K-12 Education Committee. Fully funding education was cited as the most important issue of the election by Litzow and Wellman prior to the primary, as the Legislature has pledged to address the McCleary decision this session.

Senn beat challenger John Pass, a Republican from Bellevue, 65.02 percent to 34.85 percent, and Clibborn earned 55.11 percent of the vote to Michael Appleby’s 32.96 percent, William Popp’s 9.71 percent and Angel Jordan’s 2.12 percent for state representative Pos. 1 and Pos. 2, respectively.

Clibborn has served in the Legislaure since 2002, and Senn has served since 2013. Both were previously on the Mercer Island City Council, as was Litzow.
