Right now there are two possible scenarios for a school facilities bond that would be on an April ballot:

Option A: $90.785 million

• Acquire land for possible fourth school or to relocate transportation fleet.

• Rebuild Islander Middle School on its present campus. A new IMS would most likely open for the fall of 2017.

• Planning dollars for rebuilding all three elementary schools, and for upgrading six to 12 classrooms at Mercer Island High School.

• Modernizing Mary Wayte Pool — extending its life for 10-15 years. This is contingent on a continuing interlocal agreement with the City of Mercer Island.

• Create a master plan for the mega-block that now contains the high school, administration building, stadium, PEAK, Youth Theatre Northwest and day care facilities.

Option B: $199.285 million

• Acquire land for possible fourth school or to relocate transportation fleet.

• Rebuild Islander Middle School on its present campus.

• Rebuild the three elementary schools.

• Modernize six to 12 classrooms at MIHS, mainly for updated science labs.

• Modernize Mary Wayte Pool.

• Create a master plan for the mega-block.

If option A is selected, a second ballot proposition at a later date could include:

Option A1: $110.55 million

• Rebuild the three elementary schools.

• Upgrade the stadium.

• Modernize six to 12 classrooms at MIHS.

OR

Option A2: $132.55 million

• Build elementary school four and rebuild the three existing elementary schools.

• Upgrade the stadium.

• Modernize six to 12 classrooms at MIHS.

School Board bond discussion continues

The Mercer Island School District Board of Directors will hold its regularly scheduled meeting on Thursday, Jan. 26, at 7 p.m. in the board room.

The board will meet in executive session at 6 p.m., then will continue their discussion on school facilities and the upcoming bond issue.
