Property tax bills for 2013 were mailed to King County residents in mid-February. Here’s a look at just where that money goes.

Though check are sent to King County, the County receives just 17 cents of every dollar from property taxes. That money goes to pay for regional services which are mandated by statue, such as courts, prosecutors and jails, another other regional approved by voters, such as EMS and Medic One, regional parks and the Automated Fingerprint Identification System, as well as services for urban and rural incorporated areas, like police services and roads.

The rest of the money from property taxes is distributed to over 100 state and local taxing districts, and much of it goes toward local schools and for services in the city where people live.
