The Mercer Island baseball team entered Tuesday’s KingCo baseball tournament as the No. 4 seed, after ending the regular season tied with Bellevue. Both teams were 7-7, and a coin flip gave the Wolverines the higher seed for the tournament.

The team played Liberty Tuesday night at 7 p.m. at Bannerwood Sports Park in Bellevue. The winner of that game will play Mount Si, the KingCo regular season champs, on Thursday, May 12, at 7 p.m.

The winner of the tournament, decided at Friday night’s game, will earn the No. 1 seed out of districts into the state tournament, while the No. 2 team out of the tournament will play Metro’s No. 4 for the final spot from the SeaKing district into state.

Mercer Island, which beat the Wolverines 5-3 at Island Crest Park, is deadlocked with Bellevue and Lake Washington on earning the No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 spots into the KingCo games. As of Tuesday, Lake Washington was 7-5, while both Mercer Island and Bellevue had 7-6 league records. The Kangs and Wolverines play Wednesday, while Mercer Island takes on Sammamish, Wednesday, and Lake Washington will play Mount Si on Thursday to wrap things up. Those results will determine who gets what seed. Mount Si earned the KingCo title earlier in the season with an 11-1 record.

Against Bellevue on Tuesday, the Islanders got things going early, picking up a 1-0 lead at the end of the first inning after Jordan Richartz crossed home plate. The Islanders scored again in the second, third, and two in the fourth for a 5-0 game going into the fifth inning.

Max Dammeier held off Bellevue from the mound until the sixth inning, while Bellevue’s Conner Foreman held Mercer Island from scoring in the fifth and sixth.

Dammeier also had five hits in the game, while Evan Thompson was 3-3 at bat, with two runs and two RBIs. Brian Higgins was 2-2, with two doubles and two runs.
