Boys swim tops Bainbridge

Mercer Island boys swim and dive earned its first meet win of 2015, topping Bainbridge Island 128-58 Tuesday at Mary Wayte Pool. The Islanders won 11 of the meet’s 12 events, winning all three team relays while only dropping the 100 back to Bainbridge’s Sam Alpaugh. Oliver Hoff and Ian Caldwell each won two events, with Hoff winning the 200 free and the 500 free, and Caldwell winning the 50 free and 100 free. Ben Gore won the 200 IM (2:06.63), Ben Dixon won the diving event (242.8), Jack Larkin won the 100 fly (59.55) and Andrew Fukuda took the 100 breast (1:02.07). Next, the Islanders will take on Juanita at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 8 at Mary Wayte Pool.

Boys basketball beats Sammamish

Mercer Island boys basketball improved to 4-0 in KingCo 3A/2A league standings with a 56-49 win over Sammamish Tuesday night at Sammamish High School. Deadlocked at 36-36 after three quarters, Mercer Island (8-4, 4-0) pulled away in the final period with a 20-point fourth quarter. Josh Stenberg led the Islanders in scoring with 18 points, while Andrew Pickles had 15. Next up, Mercer Island will take on Lake Washington at 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 9 at LWHS.
