Dorothy L. Terry

Dorothy L. (Pride) Terry

In 1914 Dorothy was born in Seattle to Nell and Walter Pride, just a few years before World War I and the influenza epidemic. She passed away peacefully on 16 December, 2009, just three weeks shy of 96, at Faerland Terrace in Seattle. The sixth of seven siblings, Gordon, Purdy, Addie, Marjorie, Cliff, and Peggy, Dot was the last to pass on. During the Great Depression she sat at a long family table provided by her shipwright father. Now she sits at an even longer table with family and friends. Graduating from Garfield High School (Bulldogs) in 1931, she worked at Rhodes Department Store bakery. She met a handsome fledgling artist, Roy (Hap) Terry, on a blind date. (Portrait above, by Hap, c.1935) They were married at Epiphany Episcopal Church in Madrona in 1935, near one of her childhood homes on Florence Court. Hap and Dot started life together in the Belroy Apartments on Capitol Hill near good friends Meigs and Mary Close. Before World War II, they moved to a new housing development called Vista Villa near Harry and Betty Webster and John and Jeanie Haddock in South Park overlooking Boeing Field. After sons Mike and Mark were born the family moved to a three room cottage on Mercer Island in 1949. Always active in the Mercer Island Community Club, and with friends at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, she was a leader in the altar guild and helped found and operate Emmy’s Attic downstairs thrift shop, which was a major source of funds for Emmanuel’s social outreach efforts. Throughout her life Dot was dedicated to service, active beyond Emmanuel in several other organizations. An avid reader, crossword puzzler, and gardener, she was friend to many on Mercer Island through her “Knitty Ladies”, garden, and bridge clubs.Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years in 2003. The family would like to thank all those who cared so well for her and provided companionship in her latter years, especially those from Family Resource Home Care and Faerland Terrace. She is survived by Mike (Julie), Mark (Catherine), four grand-children: Shannon Maykovich (Vincent), Ryan (Traci), Rebecca Novak (Mark), and Samuel, and five great grandchildren: Bailey, Lauren, Madalyn, Ashley Maykovich and Jake Terry. She was a great lady and great grandmother, we will all miss her very much. A memorial service will be held at the Emmanuel Episcopal Church on Mercer Island on 9 January, 2010, at 1:00 PM. Remembrances may be made to the Church for its work with the needy.
