Walter D. Ritchie, 82, passed away on June 14, 2025. He was Chief Engineer of the Port of Seattle from 1983- 1997, and was known for his compassion, principle, and integrity.
Born in Berkeley, CA, to the late Alexander and Jean Ritchie, Walt graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1965. He began his civil engineering career in Alaska before joining the Port of Seattle. As Chief Engineer, Walt led major development projects at Port terminals and Sea- Tac Airport. Upon his 1997 retirement, the U.S. Executive Director stated, that the Port of Seattle is “the Port Walt built.” Walt later worked for KPFF.
Walt was a devoted husband and supporter of his family. A professing Christian, Walt was a member of Crossroads Bible Church. He is survived by his wife, Thelma, his three children and seven grandchildren: Heather & Adam Richardson (Paul, Jonathan, Anna), Jeff & Lisa Ritchie (Caleb, Sadie), and Brian & Lesley Ritchie (Elijah, Owen). He is also survived by his brother John (Judy) Ritchie.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Jubilee REACH or Free Wheelchair Mission. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM on August 9, 2025, at Crossroads Bible Church, 15815 SE 37th St., Bellevue, WA. Jeremiah 9:23-24
