Salam Alikum.

The words above are a traditional Islamic greeting and farewell that mean peace be upon you. The word Islam itself means attaining peace through submission to one God, yet this definition contradicts many views of Islam, which is not surprising during this time of turmoil.

I have always been open with my religious beliefs. It is not uncommon for me to answer questions about Islam in airports or grocery lines, asked by complete strangers. The dialogue is usually slightly awkward, but the importance of clarifying misinformation outweighs my discomfort.

Learning about Islam is difficult and many people, including Mercer Island residents, are curious about the fastest-growing religion.

With the rise of so-called Islamic terrorism, the recent statements from presidential candidates, and the unfolding refugee crisis, now is the time to learn about and embrace our differences.

The King County Library System and the Friends of the Mercer Island Library are sponsoring a free panel about Islam at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 23 at the Mercer Island Presbyterian Church, 3605 84th Ave. SE, Mercer Island.

The diverse group of panelists includes an Imam, an educator, a doctor, a University of Washington student and a professional soccer coach. They will each present their perspectives on Islam and answer all the questions you bring.

Salam Alikum.
