Just before Thanksgiving, Mercer Island’s City Council reaffirmed this community’s core values of civility, equality, diversity and sustainability in a thoughtful proclamation.
The Mercer Island School District’s superintendent recently sent a similar message to the community, which also reflected on the district’s work that is grounded in mutual respect and committed to “valuing diversity, equity and inclusion.”
We say bravo.
Mercer Islanders share a place that is rich in diversity with active citizens working to make this a good place to live for everyone. Look no farther than our Farmer’s Market, Youth and Family Services, award-winning music and arts and sports programs for our kids, and environmental programs.
How much we can get done when we work collectively with common purpose.
In the coming months, we will continue to wrestle with issues with long-term consequence, including how best to shape our neighborhoods and maintain access to/from Interstate 90.
Let us each commit to being a shining example of how a community can truly problem solve through vibrant debates that focus on issues and respect for our elected leaders and the community members suggesting solutions. Language matters.
This holiday season as we share good wishes with neighbors, friends and colleagues, let us also reflect on the values and mutual respect that have built this community and recommit to bringing out what is best in each of us.
