We deserve better | Letter

As an individual who has participated in the political process, and who has been actively watching this year's election activities unfold, I can only express what I hear from so many: we deserve better. If the current crop of candidates for president is any indication, we are in for a very rocky road.

As an individual who has participated in the political process, and who has been actively watching this year’s election activities unfold, I can only express what I hear from so many: we deserve better. If the current crop of candidates for president is any indication, we are in for a very rocky road.

I understand that there are divergent points of view. Indeed, that is part of our country’s appeal. What I disagree with is the need for every candidate to lower themselves to a level below most kindergartners. Do we really want a true leader to be someone who resorts to petty name calling, lies, threats, being a quitter if they don’t get their way and tantrums? All of those are things we work hard to teach children so that they will grow to be responsible, respectful adults able and, hopefully, willing to engage in thoughtful discussions and to work well with others to achieve goals.

We deserve better. We deserve a leader with a true vision of how this country can build a positive relationship with our enemies, who truly works for all of us, including those often disenfranchised from the majority. We deserve a leader who leads by example not by power. We must support leaders who can bring this country together, not separate us further.
