The Mercer Island girls water polo team wrapped up their season on Friday evening at the Mercer Island Country Club, taking fourth place in state. The Islanders lost their final game to Newport 6-4.

The Islanders beat Kentridge during the first round of the tournament last week and played in the second round last Wednesday to advance to Friday’s match.

Despite the upper hand in the first quarter against Newport, when the Islanders scored twice to Newport’s one goal, the Newport offense sneaked a goal in during the second to tie the game at the half.

Both teams earned a goal during the third quarter to keep the match tied, but in the fourth Newport surged, earning three goals to the Islanders’ one.

Junior Alyssa Weed had two of the Islanders’ goals during the game, while teammate Emma Nelson scored once. Senior captain Stephanie Hammond had one goal during the game.

Hammond was named to the second team all state during the tournament, while Nelson and Rachel Frank were named to the third team all state. Caitlyn Russell, the goalie for the Islanders and a team captain, was named one of the top three goalies in the state.
