Islanders earn all-league, all-state recognition
Eleven members of the Mercer Island baseball team were recognized in the 2016 All-KingCo 3A selections.
Harrison Goonewardene, Anthony Scalzo, Noah Hsue and Josh Stenberg were named to the All-KingCo first team. Peter Lopes, Michael Petrie and Alex Shanks were named to the second team. Lucas Chapman, Jack Smith and Parker Simpson each earned honorable mention.
Three Mercer Island girls lacrosse players were named to the 2016 All-State team. Allie Dunbar, along with Eastside Catholic’s Sara Williams, were named all-state goalie. Holly Waggoner earned all-state attack recognition and Sophia Cero was named all-state defense.
Rigby, Woody earn Coach of the Year honors
Mercer Island baseball coach Dominic Woody and boys soccer coach Colin Rigby recently earned 2016 KingCo 3A Coach of the Year honors for their respective sports.
Woody led Mercer Island baseball to its first 2A/3A KingCo league title since 2010 and the Islanders made back-to-back appearances at the state tournament for the first time in program history. Mercer Island finished its season 16-2 in league play and 20-5 overall.
Rigby led Mercer Island soccer to its second-straight undefeated season in KingCo league competition, with the Islanders going 12-0-0 in league play and 17-1-1 overall. Mercer Island returned to the state tournament for the third time in the last five years.
