Islanders fall in first non-conference game of the season | Prep baseball results

Despite a very wet afternoon, the Mercer Island baseball team traveled to play Garfield on Monday afternoon in the first game of the season. The Islanders lost 6-4 to the non-conference opponent.

UPDATE: Due to unplayable field conditions, the Islanders game scheduled for Tuesday, March 13 against Seattle Prep has been rescheduled to Wednesday, March 14 at 3:30 p.m.

Despite a very wet afternoon, the Mercer Island baseball team traveled to play Garfield on Monday afternoon in the first game of the season. The Islanders lost 6-4 to the non-conference opponent.

Mercer Island held a 1-0 advantage going into the third inning, but Garfield added two in the bottom of the third, followed by four in the fourth, while holding Mercer Island runnels until the fifth inning. The team added three in the fifth, but it wasn’t enough to take the lead.

Mercer Island scored it’s four runs on four hits with two errors, while Garfield’s six runs came off two hits.

David Oppenheim was 1-3 with one run and two RBI and a home run.

The Islanders will face Seattle Prep on Tuesday, March 13 at 3:30 p.m. at Steve Cox Field, weather permitting. The team will then play Newport on Thursday, March 15 at Newport High School, before traveling to Moses Lake this weekend for games against Moses Lake and Union.
