A little under a year ago, the result between the Mercer Island and Bellevue lacrosse teams was much different. While in that match the Wolverines walked away the state champions, on Thursday night the Islanders proved they hadn’t forgotten.

Mercer Island beat Bellevue 8-6 to clarify their stance near the top of the league standings. The team is now 6-0 this season.

The Islanders ended the first with a 5-1 lead, and improved their lead over Bellevue to a 7-2 halftime score.

But after the break, Bellevue roared back, holding the Islanders scoreless while the Wolverines added two more goals to the score. Bellevue also outscored Mercer Island in the fourth, but it wasn’t enough to capture the win.

Captains Doug Mahony and Connor Bernal had two goals for the team, while senior Colton Knebel had nine ground balls in the match. Matt Shields had three goals during the game, while Brian Bernstein had seven saves in the net.

Bellevue slipped to fourth place in the league with their first loss of the season.

Mercer Island will spend the weekend in Vancouver, facing some top teams from Oregon, before heading to Massachusettes for games against top Eastern U.S. teams.
