In the quarterfinal round of the district basketball tournament the Mercer Island boys lost to Chief Sealth on Tuesday night 68-54.

The Islanders now face Franklin on Friday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. in a loser out game. The Islanders will need to secure two more wins in order to earn a place in the state tournament.

Against the Seahawks, the Islanders were down 27-13 at the half, but returned with 15 points in the third quarter, while holding Chief Sealth to 11 points, but they still trailed by 10 at the end of the third. The fourth quarter didn’t include a Mercer Island resurgence as the Seahawks cruised to a 30 point quarter to end the game.

Quinn Sterling had the game high for the Islanders with 14 points, followed by 13 from Derek Newhof.

With the loss the team faces Franklin, a team which lost it’s quarterfinal match to Seattle Prep on Tuesday night.

In order to make the state tournament, the Islanders will need to beat Franklin and the winner of the Lake Washington, Rainier Beach game for the No. 5 seed to state.
