Mercer Island boys lacrosse earn another win in New York | Prep Notebook

Boys lacrosse

The Mercer Island boys lacrosse team is in New York this week during the high school’s spring break, where they are now 2-0 with one game left to play in the trip.

The Islanders beat Mahopac High School 7-3 on Wednesday afternoon in New York. Mercer Island was up 3-2 going into the half and added two unanswered goals in the third period and another two in the fourth. Islanders goalie Hap Giraud had eight saves during the win, while John Wettack and Matt Shields had three goals each.

Last night the team beat Lakeland/Panas 8-6. Connor Bernal, John Harrison, Colton Knebel, Alex Robbs, Steven Taylor and Jon Wettack all scored for the Islanders in the win. Goalie Giraud had 10 saves during the win.

The Islanders will face off against Guilderland Saturday at 4 p.m. in New York in the team’s last game of the trip.

The team said at the beginning of the season a major goal was to come away from this trip with several wins against some of the best lacrosse teams in the country.

During last weekend’s Northwest Invitational lacrosse tournament Mercer Island finished with a 2-0 record, beating two teams from Oregon.

The Islanders first faced off against Sunset, a team from Portland, Ore. on Friday night. Mercer Island gain the quick advantage for the 10-3 final score. The next afternoon the team played Lincoln, also out of Portland. Lincoln put up a fight throughout the match, forcing the teams into overtime, but Mercer Island found the win for a 12-11 final score.

Boys soccer

The Mercer Island boys soccer team was handed a loss on Tuesday night, going down 2-0 against Mount Si at home. The game was scoreless until the last few minutes of the match when Doug Silvius for Mount Si found an opening for an unassisted goal in the 88th minute. The Wildcats followed up with a second to end the game in the 89th minute off of Cody Clearman, assisted by Dyson Fowler. Wildcat goalie Ryan Herman is credited with the shutout.

Last Friday the Islanders traveled to Liberty to face the Patriots in a league match up, which Mercer Island won 3-0. Senior James Kashima started the night off with an unassisted goal in the 12 minute of play, before teammate Perrin Guyer earned his own goal in the 19th minute. Liberty was able to hold off the Islanders until the second half with Tyler Ybarra scored in the 73rd minute.

The Islanders are 2-2-2 this season and will host Sammamish at home on Friday night.

Water polo

The girls water polo team from MIHS split their last contests before spring break, losing to Shorewood and beating Roosevelt.

Last Tuesday the team traveled to face Shorewood, and lost 4-2. Islanders struggled to find their offensive openings in the first two quarters, going scoreless against Shorewood who earned a goal in each quarter. Senior Stephanie Hammond had the Islanders only goals.

The next day the Islanders hosted Roosevelt in their first home game of the season. Mercer Island won 13-4 over the Roughriders.

Starting off exactly the opposite of their game against Shorewood, the Islanders put up five goals in the first quarter, followed by three in the second. In the second half Mercer Island had four goals in the third, and added the final point in the last quarter. Roosevelt had two points in the first half, and attempted to make a final offensive push in the fourth to earn two points.

Hammond had eight points during the contest, while senior Rachel Frank and junior Emma Nelson had scored a point. Junior Alyssa Weed had three points during the game.

The Islanders will play in the Spring Siesta at the King County Aquatic Center April 2-4.

Softball

The Mercer Island girls softball team were handed a large defeat by Garfield on March 25 when the team lost 24-7 at home. The Islanders quickly faced a 10-4 deficit after the first two innings, and couldn’t find their way back out, even after scoring two more runs in the third. Garfield went on a streak, posting 12 more runs in the fourth and fifth innings before the game was called.

The Islanders will host Bellevue on April 6 at 4:30 p.m. at the South Mercer Playfields.
