The Mercer Island boys lacrosse team suffered its first loss to a Washington state opponent this season, falling to Issaquah 8-7 Friday night at Issaquah High School.

Senior midfielder Jake Lindahl fired the game-winner in overtime to give Issaquah (11-4, 7-2 in KingCo) its first win over Mercer Island since 2012.

It was a low-scoring affair through the first half, with Issaquah claiming a 2-1 halftime advantage. Issaquah began to pull away with four goals in the third quarter to extend the lead to 6-2 at the end of the period. Mercer Island (11-4, 9-1) erupted for five fourth-quarter goals, with Mitchell Mandt finding Johnny Van der Velden for the equalizer with five seconds left in regulation, knotting the game at 7-7 to send the game into extra time.

Lindahl’s game-winner came two minutes into the overtime period. He finished with four goals and picked up four ground balls, while Issaquah goalie Jordan Dondoyano recorded 10 saves. Van der Velden had four goals for the Islanders, while Mercer Island goalie Ezra Tillinger finished with 12 saves.

Next, Mercer Island will face Sammamish-Interlake at 8 p.m. Tuesday at Sammamish High School.

Bivens throws one-hitter as Lake Washington shuts out MI softball

Lake Washington pitcher Tori Bivens held the Mercer Island softball team to one hit while the Kang offense exploded for 10 runs as Lake Washington defeated Mercer Island 10-0 Friday at Lake Washington High School.

The Kangs (14-2, 14-0 in KingCo) provided the run support early, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Kayla Varney reached base for Mercer Island (5-12, 5-10) on an error to lead off the top of the fourth inning. She was followed in the order by Camryn Steiner, who broke up the no-hitter with an infield single to short. Bivens retired the next three batters to end the top half of the inning with Lake Washington ahead 5-0.

Bivens went 2-for-3 at the plate, batting in two runs. Marissa Ewald also went 2-for-3 with two RBI for the Kangs.

Next, the Islanders take on Bellevue (7-8, 6-7) at 4:30 p.m. Monday at Bellevue High School.
