MI boys lacrosse wins state tourney opener

The Mercer Island boys lacrosse team opened state tournament competition with a decisive 17-5 win over Gig Harbor Tuesday night at Peninsula High School.

The Islanders (15-5) pulled away with seven goals in the second quarter, claiming a 9-2 halftime advantage, while holding Gig Harbor (12-2) to three goals in the second half.

Mitchell Mandt led Mercer Island in scoring with six goals and had one assist. Johnny van der Velden scored five goals to go with three assists and three ground balls. Donny Howard scored once and collected six ground balls, and Ezra Tillinger posted 10 saves in the net.

Mercer Island advances to the state tournament quarterfinals and will take on Eastside Catholic (14-2) at 5:30 p.m. Friday at Eastside Catholic High School.

MI boys soccer shuts out Mountlake Terrace in state matchup

Getting two goals from senior Austin Taylor, the Mercer Island boys soccer team shut out Mountlake Terrace 3-0 in the team’s state opener Tuesday at Islander Stadium.

KingCo regular season MVP Eric Dreyer put the Islanders (16-1-1) on the board with a goal in the 28th minute. Taylor extended the Islander lead after halftime, with both of his goals coming in the second half.

Mercer Island will take on Roosevelt (14-4-2) in the state quarterfinals at 5 p.m. Friday at Interbay Stadium in Seattle.
