Mercer Island girls lacrosse | Spring sports previews

Coach: Liz Shields

Coach: Liz Shields

Last season: Second in Alki division, lost to Snohomish in state tournament.

Captains: Sophia Cero, Holly Waggoner

Other key athletes: Kate Brodsky, Leah Atkinson, Ragen Plummer

Strengths: “We just have a really solid team,” Cero said. “Everyone on our team has a high level of potential, and we also have a strong defense.”

“I think overall, we just have really strong girls,” Waggoner said. “I’m on attack and with me, we have girls like [junior] Leah Paborsky, who has been on [the team] since her freshman year and she’s always been a strong player for us. And then we have some girls who are sophomores who are stepping up, definitely in the midfield who are really fast, so that will help us, too.

Needs to improve: “We need to work on our transitions up the midfield, working on clears up to the defense and midfielders, and then moving on to attack,” Waggoner said. “It’s difficult because we don’t normally practice full field, so we don’t really get that chance to actually go all the way up.”

Goals: “We’re all really committed to our goal for the year, we’re not cocky and saying that we want to make it to state, but we’re very focused and that’s our goal,” Waggoner said. “We made that clear to everyone on the team and everyone has that same goal.”

Game to watch: Lake Sammamish, @ Issaquah, Bainbridge, Lakeside

“We have an incredibly hard first four games,” Cero said. “We really want to start the season with four wins, that would be awesome.”
