Upon first glance, it appeared the Mercer Island girls tennis team’s seven-year streak of winning the KingCo 3A championships was snapped.

But a second look at the final scores showed the Islanders as co-winners of the league tournament with the Interlake Saints, Islander coach Carol Gullstad told the Reporter on May 28.

The tournament took place May 10 and 11 at Mercer Island High School. Mercer Island has walked away with the top 3A KingCo tournament spot since 2009.

“From our standpoint, we’re KingCo champs and runner-up at state is great validation for all the hard work,” Gullstad said. “Saying every point counts was a fitting irony to how everything turned out.”
