Interlake boasted the top two placers in the singles bracket, with Angel Le defeating teammate Shreyaa Mukund 7-5, 6-3 to win the 3A KingCo singles title. Both Le and Mukund advanced to the district tournament along with Bellevue’s Paige Sorgen, who defeated teammate Tessa Tapmongkel 6-2, 6-1 in the third-place match.

Though Mercer Island didn’t advance as many district qualifiers as in years past, Islander coach Carol Gullstad said her team still maintained its goal of winning a state championship as a team. The chatter among the coaches at the KingCo tournament was the loaded bracket posed the toughest week of competition in the state for their players.

“I’m super proud of the girls, they played a great tournament and everybody contributed points. It was truly a team effort,” she said. “We were the only team where all of our singles and doubles players advanced through the first round. That speaks to the depth of our team.”

The 3A SeaKing district tournament began today and will wrap up May 18 at Lower Woodland Park in Seattle.
