MIHS boys defend 3A KingCo cross country championship

Mercer Island High School’s boys cross country team defended its 3A KingCo title on Oct. 21 at Marymoor Park in Redmond.

In the 5,000-meter race, Islander Owen Powell led the pack with a time of 15:55:2. In the final team standings, Mercer Island tallied 40 points to take the crown. The team consists of Powell, Matthew Lawrence, Brooks Enge, Carson Schiller, Lars Eide, Silas Rennie and Clark Koopman. Powell and Lawrence (fifth place in 16:52.7) made the first All KingCo team, and Enge, Schiller and Eide made the second All KingCo team.

On the girls’ side, Mercer Island placed second, with Ava Zhang and Sofia Loop earning second All KingCo team honors. Zhang (21:07.2) and Loop (21:11.1) took 11th and 12th, respectively, at the race, and Mia Kinney (21:11.9) placed 13th.

Coaches are Dyan Simon, Susan Empey, Eric Goldhammer and Gavin Cree.

The 3A Sea-King District 2 Championships will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Oct. 27 at Lower Woodland Park in Seattle.
