MIHS golfers move into the second round at state tournament

Several members of the Mercer Island girls and boys golf teams qualified for the second round of the 3A state tournament in Spokane.

Several members of the Mercer Island girls and boys golf teams qualified for the second round of the 3A state tournament in Spokane.

In the boys competition Kyle Code finished the first day with a 72 to qualify for the second round of the tournament. Samson Martinez from Pasco led the field with a 67.

Charlie Kern also earned a spot in the second day with a 73. Crawford Leeds just missed the cut to qualify after earning a 79 in day one. The last golfer to qualify finish with 78 strokes.

George Jiranek also finished the first day out of the race for round two with a 83.

In the girls competition Chelsea Saelee had a strong first day, finishing in third place with a 73, just two strokes behind Rachel Lewis from Peninsula.

Haley Chinn moved to the next round after finishing in 15th during the first day with a score of 84. Islander teammate Kayce Ogishima moved to day two with a 89, as did Jolie Shen who shot a 90.
