Mercer Island High School hired one of its own to be its new head football coach on Monday. Math teacher and long-time Islander Brett Ogata takes over for interim coach John Williams, who guided the team to a 3-7 record last season.

Ogata has spent the last two seasons as quarterback coach for Skyline High School and has been coaching various sports, including basketball and tennis, for years with the Islanders.

The 1989 MIHS graduate won two state titles with the Spartans.

Ogata originally applied for the head coaching position in 2007 when former coach Dick Nicholl retired after three decades in the position.

Bill Heglar took over for Nicholl and then abruptly resigned after one season to take the athletic director position at Kent Lake High School.
