It was a blustery day Thursday as the Mercer Island boys and girls cross country teams prepared for the KingCo championship meet at Lake Sammamish State Park. The good year that the girls team put together, losing just one in-league meet, continued as they finished second overall despite not having a single runner finish in the top 10. The Islander boys team took a different route by placing three runners in the top 25, but placed fifth overall as a team.

The Mercer Island boys golf team won the 3A KingCo medalist tournament on Oct. 15 at Snohomish Golf Course with a team score of 381 strokes, nine ahead of second place Skyline. The win comes just a week removed from the program’s second regular season championship in as many years.

The Mercer Island boys tennis season didn’t go as planned. A loss to Newport to begin the season, and a subsequent 1-4 start, ended any chance for a league title. But there was always the 3A KingCo tournament on the horizon, giving the players an opportunity to win a title.

For the second consecutive week, the Mercer Island cross country team ran well at Lake Sammamish State Park. But this time it was the district meet, the stakes were a lot higher and the runners had to battle more than just the opposition.

One of the drummers in the Mercer Island High School marching band was dressed as Oscar the Grouch on Friday night as the Islander football team took on Liberty. Fittingly, Oscar the Grouch is the only character that would like how the Mercer Island football team played during the second half of the 51-14 loss.

The state cross country meet was different than the past two weeks for Mercer Island runners. Unlike the district and KingCo meets at Lake Sammamish State Park during the previous two weeks, the team had to travel four hours east to Pasco and run in dry, warm weather. But just like the previous two weeks, the girls team and boys runners all performed to their peak.
