Mitzel makes first trip to the winner’s circle at Teal
Islander Paul Mitzel made his first trip to the winner’s circle Jan. 15 at the Teal Bend Open as a part of the Junior Golf Tour. Mitzel completed three rounds of golf eight-over to take first place overall.
During the opening round Mitzel carded a 77 and was tied with four other players for third place going into the Jan. 14 second round. During the second round Mitzel carded a solid round of even par (72) as he took the lead and put himself in position to win his first FCWT event of the season. During the final day of competition Mitzel carded a closing round of 75 and finished three strokes ahead of John Catlin of Carmichael, CA (2009) who began the day in third place. This was just Mitzel’s third competition of the season.
MIBGC looking for experienced officials
The Mercer Island Boys & Girls Club is seeking experienced basketball officials for the 2007 season for grades 3-9 for boys and girls leagues. The season will run until Mid March. Please contact Meredith Cutting or Donna Eken at 232-4548 for more information.
Mercer Island Pony baseball registration
Island Baseball Club registration has opened for Mercer Island spring boys’ baseball ages 13-17. Pallis to race at Daytona
Mercer Island resident Chris Pallis, along with Don Kitch (Bellevue, Wash.), Chris Pennington (Redmond, Wash.), and Tony Bawcutt (Kirkland, Wash.) will race the No. 82 Porsche sponsored by Live Search during the Rolex 24 at Daytona, January 27-28 as a part of the Synergy Racing team.
Synergy will also field a second Team Seattle entry—the No. 83 Porsche—driven by Dave Gaylord (Graham, Wash.), Don Pickering (Reno, Nev.), Hal Hilton (Issaquah, Wash.) and Ben McCrackin (Corpus Christi, Texas).
Practice and qualifying for the Rolex 24 At Daytona gets underway tomorrow on Daytona International Speedway’s 3.56-mile road course. The green flag drops on Jan. 27 with the race concluding Jan. 28. Live television coverage of the race will be available on Fox Sports and SPEED. MSN Autos will provide coverage of Team Seattle’s efforts throughout the race.
