Wrestling defeats Bellevue, 39-37 | League opener marked by freshmen’s success

The Mercer Island wrestling team started the regular season with a big 39-37 victory over Bellevue on Friday, thanks to five pins, including two by freshmen.

The Mercer Island wrestling team started the regular season with a big 39-37 victory over Bellevue on Friday, thanks to five pins, including two by freshmen.

Islander freshman Scott Mills took to the mat at 112 pounds and battled his opponent all the way through to the third round, when stamina came into play. The Mercer Island wrestler earned the pin at the 4:48 mark of the match.

Mercer Island freshman T. Lassau earned his pin during the second round. Lassau forced his opponent’s shoulders to the mat at the 2:56 mark of the match.

Other Islanders earning pins were Scott Mills, Blake Johnson, T. Lassau, Colton Knebel and Graham Horgdal.

Islander David Bowman won by decision, 14-9.

The only other points scored for Mercer Island came on a forfeit. Bellevue also earned six points via forfeit.

The Islanders will host a huge tournament on Saturday at Mercer Island High School starting at 10 a.m.
