Islanders boys water polo team secures No. 1 seed

The Mercer Island Islanders boys water polo team clinched the No. 1 seed to the regional playoffs courtesy of a 17-15 victory against Roosevelt on Oct. 23. The regional playoffs will begin on Nov. 3 at Rogers High School in Puyallup.

The 32-goal slugfest between Mercer Island and Roosevelt produced a score every 52 seconds.

“We struggled on defense to shut down our opponents and delivered a high scoring game at Roosevelt,” Islanders head coach Calvin White said.

Islanders’ goalie Will Cero had 15 saves between the posts in the win. Sammy Vacca scored a game-high six goals and Carson Coe added three goals in the victory. Leif Gullstad, Evan Hill, Daniel Kavesh and Sam Nair each scored two goals apiece in the contest as well.

Mercer Island also captured a 15-9 victory against Sammamish on Oct. 26.
