Homeowner finds two burglars in his garage | Mercer Island Police Blotter

Two men fled from a garage in the 3800 block of 80th Avenue S.E. after being discovered by the homeowner, a 54-year-old man, who was going outside to smoke after 9 p.m. on Feb. 11. Entry into the house could be made from the garage, which was attached to the residence. The suspects jumped into a white minivan, which was driven by a third suspect, and sped away. No items were reported missing.

The Mercer Island Police Department reported 1,215 calls for service in January, with 17 traffic accidents, 328 traffic citations, six DUIs, three hit-and-runs, one auto theft, six burglaries, 26 thefts, and six cases of simple assault. There were 39 arrests, and four juveniles were arrested.

Feb. 7

Bike found: An Iron Horse bike was found by a Kirkland man, 23, near brush in the 3600 block of 84th Avenue S.E.

Feb. 11

Car prowl: A gym bag was stolen out of an unlocked Hyundai Elantra between 8 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. in the 2900 block of 76th Avenue S.E. The bag contained clothes, cosmetics and bottles of prescription medication. The estimated loss was $750.

Feb. 13

DUI: Police stopped a speeding vehicle without tail lights at 1:41 a.m. in the 6300 block of Island Crest Way. The driver, 18, and passenger, 16, were arrested for DUI and minor in possession. The passenger was released to an older brother, and the driver was released to a sober adult at the MIPD.

Car prowl: The front passenger window was shattered out of a Chevrolet Tahoe in the 8100 block of S.E. 71st Street between 5 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Police obtained possible palm and finger prints of a suspect. An estimated $1,400 worth of items was stolen, including a 13-inch MacBook laptop with uploaded software worth $500, a satchel bag containing scholastic material, and a credit card.

Car prowl: An unknown object was used to smash out the driver’s window of a Honda Civic in the 4200 block of 91st Avenue S.E. between 6 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., while the victim, a 21-year-old Seattle woman, was having dinner with her parents. Damages to the vehicle were estimated at $250. A school bag containing a Nikon digital SLR camera, an iPod Touch, and school work were stolen. The loss was $1,070.

Hit-and-run: An unknown vehicle sideswiped the rear bumper of a Lexus while backing out of a parking spot in the Mercerdale Professional Center lot in the 3200 block of 78th Avenue S.E. sometime between 12 p.m. and 2:15 p.m.

Feb. 14

Arrest: The MI Municipal Court remanded a Renton woman, 44, into custody in a Newcastle Police Department case.

Car prowl: Multiple CDs were stolen from a Mercer Island woman’s Mazda Protege in the 7200 block of S.E. 29th Street sometime between Feb. 9 and Feb. 12. The prowl was reported at 10:01 a.m.

Hit-and-run: A Mercer Island woman’s vehicle was struck sometime on Feb. 13 or Feb. 14. She suspected that her ex-husband did the damage, but a police investigation showed that to be unlikely. The location of the incident, reported at 7:25 p.m., was either the woman’s residence or One Pacific Towers in Seattle.

DUI: A Mercedes-Benz spun out while leaving an intersection in the 8400 block of eastbound I-90 at 9:40 p.m. Police arrested the driver, a 50-year-old Seattle man, who smelled of intoxicants and admitted he had been drinking. He failed voluntary field sobriety tests. His vehicle was towed, and he was later released to a sober adult after being processed at the MIPD.
