In a girls lacrosse state championship final contest that went down to the wire on May 15, Eastside Catholic High School clinched a 15–14 overtime victory over Mercer Island High School (MIHS) at the Starfire Sports stadium in Tukwila. MIHS battled back from a three-goal deficit early in the third quarter to tie the game, with momentum swinging back and forth for the remainder of the matchup. There were many standout performances and a stellar defensive effort throughout the night, according to team representatives, adding that “the game was a true testament to their hard work, determination and teamwork all season long.” MIHS beat Shoreline, 17-3, in the first round, defeated Lakeside, 19-8, in the quarterfinals and downed Northshore, 16-5 in the semifinals. Mercer Island High School’s girls track and field squad placed first in the team standings at the South Sound Classic at Sparks Stadium in Puyallup on May 2. The class 3A Islanders netted 82.5 points to beat out second-place class 4A Curtis (76). The local girls’ 4x100-meter relay team (pictured) of Lauren Balousek, Hanna Lassila, Aaliyah Khan and Eloise Newman broke both the school and meet records with a time of 48.12. Balousek set a new meet record in the 400-meter run with a time of 56.02. Khan earned athlete of the meet honors by contributing to the relay, taking first in the triple jump (39-6.5) and finishing second in the long jump (18-2.25). Courtesy photo
