Support for School District Bond and Levy

Dear Editor,

As a parent of a 2012 MIHS graduate, I no longer have children in the Mercer Island School District. But like many other parents with children who have “launched” and are young adults with bright futures ahead, I believe in the importance of continuing to support our local public schools.  It is why we moved to Mercer Island ourselves, and therefore I am voting for both the bond and the levy items that will be on the ballot later this month.

My son who is a college sophomore was well-prepared by MI schools for the rigor of his college curriculum.  He also participated in cross-country and  in the marching band — both outstanding programs. The schools afforded him and us many opportunities to explore his interests and we hope that can be true for future students as well.

I also urge the district to consider the highest of environmental standards when planning for the new elementary school building as well as the renovations of IMS and MIHS.  I would like to see our school district take a leadership role in the use of sustainable materials and “green” building practices.
