Islander gymnastics take fifth at KingCo

Mercer Island High School hosted the KingCo gymnastics championship meet Saturday, Feb. 8. But despite the competition taking place in their home gym, the Mercer Island gymnastics team was not able to advance to the district meet.
The Islanders finished fifth at the KingCo gymnastics meet with a team score of 154.925. Mount Si won with a team score of 162 and Lake Washington finished second with a score of 157.6. Finishing as the top two teams at the meet, both Mount Si and Lake Washington advanced to the district meet. Rounding out the top five were Sammamish in third place with a score of 157.15 and Bellevue in fourth with a team score of 155.05.
Despite not advancing as a team, Mercer Island advanced five individual team members to the district championships, with Cheyanne Lewis, Catherine Seifert, Tonayo Crow, Emily Lightfoot and Stephanie Prince all advancing.
Sammamish’s Nykaela Dodson, as well as Bellevue’s Michelle Louie and Hannah Walsh, advanced to the district’s all around competition by finishing in the top three. Dodson, who also won the bars, beam and vault competitions, had the top all-around score of 36.6. Louie had an all around score of 34.7, and Walsh advanced with a score of 34.425. Lightfoot led the Islanders in the all around, placing tenth with a score of 32.
Mercer Island’s Seifert and Crow tied for ninth in the bars competition, scoring 7.05 and advancing to the district bars competition. Lightfoot, with a score of 6.95, and Lewis, with a score of 6.9, also advanced.
In the beam competition, Lightfoot placed seventh with a score of 8.35 and Seifert was ninth with a score of 8.3. Both advanced to the district meet, as did Crow with a score of 8.1.
Cheyanne Lewis tied for seventh in the floor competition with a score of 8.65. Mount Si’s Jenn Rogers won the event with a score of 9.3. Lewis, as well as Seifert and Prince, advanced to the district floor competition.
Advancing to the district vault competition were Crow, who placed fourth with a score of 8.425, Lightfoot with a score of 8.35, and Seifert with a score of 8.05.
The 3A gymnastics district championship will take place Saturday, Feb. 15 at Mount Si High School. Gymnasts will march in at 10:45, and competitions will begin at 10:55 a.m.
