Islander wrestlers edge Hazen at Seamount

The Mercer Island wrestling team finished first at the KingCo/Seamount Sub-Regional tournament, edging Hazen 212.5-209. Ten wrestlers from Mercer Island advanced to the Region III tournament. It was the second consecutive year the Islanders won the KingCo/Seamount tournament title. It was the team’s fifth-straight dual match title, and the team’s sixth in seven years.

Mercer Island had six wrestlers in the finals with championship wins going to Luke Wilson (126), Jake Pruchno (132) and Evan Condon (195). Finishing second were Taylan Yuasa (113), Trevor Gullstad (132) and Scott Lee (138). Kevin Pedersen took third at 106, and Tanner Ranz took third at 182. Teague Frazier finished fourth at 170, Dylan Majewski was fifth at 285, and Kenji Walker took sixth at 138.

At the girls sub-regional tournament, Ailin Fu finished fifth at 124 and Jenny Chen finished sixth at 130.

Advancing to the regional tournament were Evan Condon, Teague Frazier, Trevor Gullstad, Scott Lee, Dylan Majewski, Kevin Pedersen, Jake Pruchno, Tanner Ranz, Luke Wilson and Taylan Yuasa.

Also at the tournament, Islander Middle School wrestling coach John Frazier was recognized as Middle School Coach of the Year, with the IMS Gators winning its second straight league title.

The regional tournament will take place at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 15 at Skyline High School.
