Police Blotter | Juveniles dump stolen vehicle on Mercer Island

December 20

Burglary: An 88-year-old woman who was out shopping with her son came back to her apartment at the 9100 block of Fortuna Drive and found that several antique items were stolen, including a biography of Teddy Roosevelt, a handcrafted brass ladle with an iron handle, brass sleigh bells on a strap, an engraving of the New York City skyline, a 14 karat gold ring, a gold band, an old Seafirst bank bag containing loose coins and handcrafted Christmas cards. There were no signs of forced entry.

December 22

Warrant arrest: A 64-year-old Kirkland woman was taken into custody after being stopped at the 8000 block of North Mercer Way for having an obstructed license plate. A DOL computer check indicated she had an arrest warrant from Bellevue PD for an amount of bail of $2,500. She was arrested and transported to MIPD, where a Bellevue police support officer took her into custody.

December 23

Burglary: An unknown suspect shattered the rear glass door of a 45-year-old man’s home at the 2800 block of 61st Avenue S.E. The home was entered and searched but police said it was unclear if anything was stolen.

Theft: A 28-year-old Island man said that three of his bicycles – Cannondale makes in white, purple and white and green – were missing from the bike rack on the lower parking level of the Island Square Apartments, for a loss of $2,100. The cable lock securing them had been cut.

DUI: A DUI driver struck an unoccupied parked vehicle at the 4300 block of East Mercer Way in a non-injury collision. The driver, a 64-year-old Bellevue woman, failed field sobriety tests and provided a PBT sample of .206. After arrest, she provided samples of .217 and .215.

Burglary: An unsecured vehicle belonging to a 38-year-old Island woman was prowled at the 8200 block of S.E. 82nd Street. Her Louis Vuitton leather purse was taken, along with a wallet that contained her driver’s license, credit cards and a debit card. The cards were used, for a loss of $2,000.

December 24

Theft: A UPS package containing a “Toss Across” game was stolen from a 75-year-old male at the 8300 block of S.E. 62nd Street. The game is valued at $19.99. The suspect is a white female.

December 25

Burglary: Two Islanders, a 76-year-old male and a 76-year-old female, reported a residential burglary at the 6700 block of 82nd Avenue S.E. The suspects forced entry by moving a pool table rack to get in through the window and onto the ledge. Police took fingerprints from the rack. Assorted pieces of jewelry, which were not inventoried at the time, were stolen.

December 27

Theft: A 63-year-old Island woman at the 2200 block of 66th Avenue S.E. reported that a package containing food items and a blanket was stolen from her front porch, for a loss of $100. The suspect and his car were captured on video. The car was a silver, two-door hatchback, and the suspect appeared to be a white or Hispanic male.

December 28

Motor vehicle theft: A Clyde Hill officer and Bellevue police were following a reported stolen vehicle that was finally dumped on Mercer Island, at the 3600 block of East Mercer Way by the boat launch driveway. After containment and a K-9 track, augmented by the King County Guardian 1 helicopter, police arrested two suspects. One, a female, was not booked and was released with a King County juvenile court date. The other, an 18-year-old male from Covington, was booked on a KC felony warrant for motor vehicle theft and hit and run occupied with a $20,000 bail. The car, a Toyota Corolla belonging to a 35-year-old Auburn woman, was returned.

Informational report: Police were notified of a possible suicide attempt by a 57-year-old woman overdosing on Oxycodone at the 7000 block of 92nd Avenue S.E. Police talked to two witnesses: a 58-year-old Sammamish man and a 58-year-old Maple Valley man. The woman made several suicidal comments to MIFD and had sent a suicidal type email to a friend. She was transported to Overlake Medical Center.

Burglary: A 46-year-old Island man reported that someone broke into his home at the 8500 block of S.E. 71st Street through a second story or lower level window. Police found both screens slashed and several items missing, including a Jupiter trombone, pearl necklaces, costume jewelry, a specialized brand backpack and a pillow case, for a loss of $5,100.

December 29

Prowling: A 46-year-old female reported a motor vehicle prowl with forced entry through the front passenger window at the 2700 block of 77th Avenue S.E. A $70 Ulta makeup bag was taken. Police took fingerprints from the passenger door below the damaged window.

 

 

December crime statistics

Every month, the Police Department calculates crime statistics and compares them to numbers from the year prior. In December of this year, there were 71 serious offenses, compared to 61 in 2013. The department saw an increase in cases of theft, assault and burglary. The theft category includes first, second and third degree offenses, as well as mail theft and vehicle prowls. There were fewer cases of identity theft and auto theft this year.

This year, there were 12 adult arrests and two juvenile arrests. No juveniles were arrested in December of last year.

There were 1,727 calls for service this year, compared to 1,437 in 2013.
