Hines to host open house

Residents and city leaders of Mercer Island are invited to join representatives from Hines for an informational open house to discuss Hines’ proposed apartment and retail project in the Town Center. The open house will start at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 26 at the Mercer Island Community and Event Center.
Hines looks forward to receiving public input on the design for a new development in the Town Center, according to a press release sent on Feb. 19.
The City Council recently imposed a four-month moratorium on downtown development, but it does not apply to buildings under two stories or to the Hines project, a five story mixed-use building at the south end of the block bound by 77th Avenue S.E., 78th Avenue S.E. and S.E. 29th Street.
Hines developers came before the city’s Design Commission in November 2013 and again in December 2014, presenting a massing study that alarmed some community members.
Since then, they have said they are interested in cooperating with the city throughout the public design review process and are “dedicated to communicating with the Council and community throughout this project,” according to a letter sent to the City Council on Jan. 30.
