The Mercer Island High School boys’ basketball team was named Washington’s 3A academic state champion for the highest grade-point average (GPA) in the sport by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association for 2014. This is the second year in a row that the team has earned this distinction. The team boasted an average GPA of 3.684.
“I am so proud of our student-athletes,” said Mercer Island School District Superintendent Dr. Gary Plano. “These 15 boys have achieved great things on the court and in the classroom.”
The Dairy Farmers of Washington/Les Schwab Tires Scholastic Award program recognizes and rewards teams or groups that maintain a high collective academic standard. It is open to varsity or sub-varsity sports teams, activity squads such as dance & drill and cheer squads, and fine arts groups such as bands, choirs, orchestras, dramatic troupes and forensics teams.
