Girls tennis wins KingCo

Mercer Island girls tennis secured the 3A KingCo title with a 6-1 win over Bellevue Monday, May 4 at MIHS.

In singles action, Gabby Venditti defeated Ally Du 6-0, 6-1, and Lydia Venditti beat Meredith Berry 6-0, 6-0. Bellevue’s Emily Huang beat Miji Suhr 4-6, 6-0, 1-0, while Kimia Preston won over Cheyenne Zhang 4-6, 6-1, 1-0.

Mercer Island won out in doubles matches, with Caroline Hamilton and Sammy Sweet beating Tracy Monk and Claire Johnson 6-2, 6-0, Catherine Seifert and Melanie Lee defeating Corey Chang and Brooke Chang 6-0, 6-0, and Chloe Gage and Caroline Harkins winning over Elise Berberoglu and Lea Gikas 6-1, 6-1.

Mercer Island is scheduled to take on Eastside Catholic at 3:45 p.m. Tuesday, May 5 at MIHS.

Girls LAX falls to Eastside Catholic

Mercer Island girls lacrosse saw an eight-game winning streak come to an end in their regular season finale Monday, falling to Eastside Catholic 9-7 at Islander Stadium.

Ashley Blanton scored four goals for the Crusaders (10-1-1, 3-1), while Valerie Vachris and Carlin Reilly each scored two. Hannah Paborsky led the Islanders (9-3, 5-1) with three goals.

The Islanders will begin their postseason tournament this weekend.

Bellevue hands Islander boys LAX first loss

The defending state lacrosse champion Bellevue Wolverines proved too much for previously undefeated Mercer Island, beating the Islanders 13-9 Monday afternoon at Bellevue High School.

Matt Marino and Augie Fratt each had three goals and an assist for the Wolverines (14-3, 8-0). Evan Condon posted four goals for the Islanders (17-1, 8-1) while picking up five ground balls.

Next, Mercer Island will take on Issaquah (14-2, 6-1) at 8 p.m. Friday, May 9 at Islander Stadium.
