Wendy Weiker to run for City Council seat

Wendy Weiker, a member of the city’s Utility Board and Town Center stakeholder group, is the first non-incumbent to announce her intent to run for City Council.

Weiker will run for Position No. 3, currently held by Mike Cero. Cero said he will not run again in November.

“This is an exciting time for our community,” Weiker wrote in a press release. “We’re planning and preparing for the Island’s future at our schools, in our town center, and with our public infrastructures. If elected, I will work with Islanders to keep our community safe and vibrant while ensuring that regional growth does not change what we all treasure about this city.”

Weiker applied for the Council vacancy earlier this year, to fill the seat left by Rep. Tana Senn. Senn endorses Weiker.

“Wendy has the character, experience and enthusiasm to be a great Councilmember.  She is exactly the kind of new voice and innovative thinker that we need at this critical time when the Council is wrestling with difficult and divisive issues,” Senn said.

Weiker, a Community Services Manager at Puget Sound Energy, has served for five years on the Utility Board, which is a citizen group charged with advising Mercer Island’s staff and City Council about the city’s water, storm sewer and sanitary sewer utilities. Weiker is currently assisting in the review of programs to update the city’s water utility, following last year’s boil water alert.

Weiker’s professional background includes 20 years of communications and public relations work for local area companies and nonprofit organizations.  She holds a Master of Public Administration (MPA) degree from the University of Washington Evans School of Public Affairs.

Weiker has also been involved with Mercer Island’s public schools as an active PTA participant at Island Park Elementary, Islander Middle School, and Mercer Island High School where she currently serves on the Executive Committee. She has helped raise funds for the Mercer Island Band Booster program.

Weiker has a passion for the environment and serves on the EarthShare Washington Board of Directors. EarthShare Washington works with companies to provide employee education, volunteer and giving opportunities for many of the region’s outstanding environmental organizations.

Weiker and her husband, Aric, have a daughter, Rose, who attends Mercer Island High School, and a son, Henry, who attends Islander Middle School.  They have lived on the Island for 10 years.
