Firefighters move in to new station

The Mercer Island Fire Department (MIFD) opened the new southern Fire Station 92 at 8437 S.E. 68th Street for service on June 11.
A formal dedication ceremony for the rebuilt facility is scheduled for 10 a.m. on July 18. The entire Island is invited.
Firefighters moved out of their old building late in 2013, and during construction were based out of an apartment and office at the Mercer Island Storage Court. While the winter of 2014 was milder than most, several measures were put into place to ensure all apparatus would remain in working order despite exposure to freezing conditions.
Construction on the fire station was expected to be completed in November 2014, but was delayed due to issues with the contractor work schedule and roof installation.
City staff in the Development Services Group, IT and Maintenance departments worked to prepare for a seamless transition of MIFD operations, and the few minor move-in glitches were resolved, according to a city press release.
Updated code requirements, safety features and sustainability measures have been incorporated into the new structure to support the expectations of a modern fire service. The station is designed with seismic stability in mind to ensure emergency response capabilities even during natural disasters.
