Pagliacci asks city for a break on parking

Pagliacci Pizza has asked the city to grant the restaurant a code amendment so it can circumvent a requirement to provide 10 stalls of walk-off parking. The planned location for the pizzeria is at the corner of 78th Avenue S.E. and S.E. 32nd Street, in the the Rite Aid parking lot.

Pagliacci is also planning to include a Macrina Bakery.

The code ammendment will go before the Planning Commission at its second meeting in August, then on to the City Council.

MIPD asks shoreline residents to add house numbers to docks

Just like the numbers on the front of your house, or at the end of your driveway, the same information on your waterfront property and/or dock is very useful for the Mercer Island Police Department (MIPD) when responding to emergencies, such as medical incidents, burglaries, and even fires.

The MIPD has three Marine Patrol vessels in Lake Washington and they can often reach shoreline houses quicker than anyone else, thanks to no traffic problems. Sometimes, their arrival is delayed until they can confirm exactly which dock to pull up to — in fact, this just occurred a few days ago.

Posting highly visible, high-contrast house numbers will help them help you, and could very well make a difference.

City storm water facility protects aquatic areas

The city’s Maintenance Department recently completed retrofit upgrades to a stormwater separation facility located in the maintenance yard behind City Hall.

Under federal water quality rules, the City is required to regularly clean the storm water collection infrastructure on the Island. A large vacuum-powered truck clears material from drains, pipes and other structures and delivers it to the City’s new “decant facility” where solids and liquids can be separated for further treatment.

The solids are dried, stored and tested, then hauled to an approved and permitted waste disposal center; the related liquids are collected and tested prior to their release into the sewer system for treatment at a King County plant.

Funded using an 83,000 dollar grant from the State Department of Ecology (and additional City funds, equipment and staff), the facility will improve storm drainage system maintenance, and help keep harmful road and vehicle-related pollutants from leaching back into sensitive aquatic environments.

Using the new facility will put the City’s stormwater treatment protocols far ahead of many other surrounding communities.

MICA has new headquarters

After having office space donated by Legacy Partners, the Mercer Island Center for the Arts team has a new center of operations on S.E. 29th Street, previously a State Farm insurance office.

Candidates to speak at Rotary meetings

The Mercer Island Rotary reserved time during upcoming meetings to listen to local candidates on Aug. 18, Sept. 8, Sept. 22, Oct. 6 and Oct. 20. Debbie Bertlin and Traci Granbois will speak on July 28.

Luncheons usually bring between 75 and 100 Rotarians and their guests.

Mercer Island Rotary is one of the leading clubs in the state having over 140 members and donating over $1 million to Northwest Harvest to Water Programs in India.
