The Boys & Girls Clubs of King County named John Oates as the new executive director of the Mercer Island Boys & Girls Club, the organization announced in a press release Nov. 11.

Oates comes from the Boys & Girls Club in Anchorage, Alaska and previously worked as an outdoor educator for the Mountain Park Environmental Center in Beulah, Colorado. Concurrently, he taught at Colorado State University-Pueblo as an adjunct instructor, teaching various recreation classes.

“We may never fully know the deepest impact that we as youth development professionals have on a child, so we strive to make every interaction a positive one,” Oates said in the release. “One of my main goals is to support my staff with the tools and training they need to accomplish this.”

Oates will lead and manage club staff to conduct effective operations, programs and partnerships, and oversee the club’s budget. He will also communicate with external community groups, schools, members’ parents and other stakeholders to assist in resolving problems, build partnerships and maintain good public relations.

“We are fortunate to have John join us in a leadership role at our Mercer Island Club,” said Pat Murray, Boys & Girls Clubs of King County Vice President of Club Operations. “He has the experience, the heart, and the drive to provide fun and healthy opportunities for Club members.”

Oates has a bachelor of science in exercise science, health promotion and recreation with an emphasis in outdoor adventure leadership from Colorado State University-Pueblo.
