Mercer Island lifts curfew

Earlier this morning (June 4), Mayor Benson Wong and City Manager Jessi Bon rescinded the public-safety curfew measure that was first established on June 1 and scheduled to end on Friday, June 5 at 5:00 am.

The curfew was imposed out of concern that protests over the police killing of George Floyd and other Black Americans in neighboring cities would come to the Island and potentially pose a risk to public safety. However, the city said in a news release that as of June 4 it believes it can protect public safety without the measure.

Notably, similar curfews in Redmond and Seattle were also canceled.
