Islanders notch first in state 1,600 races

Mercer Island High School’s Owen Powell (left) and Sophia Rodriguez (right) dominated the 3A state 1,600 runs with first-place finishes on May 23 at the track and field championships at Mount Tahoma Stadium in Tacoma. Powell ran a 4:07.90 and Rodriguez ran a 4:48.69. Victoria Rodriguez finished third in the 1,600 with a 4:53.67. Also for the Islanders at state on May 23, Aaliyah Khan placed fourth in the girls triple jump with a 36-10.5; Alisha Khan took eighth in the girls javelin with a 118-10; and Griffin King took 22nd in the boys shot put with a 41-4.
