William “Bill” Culverwell

November 2, 1934 – August 8, 2025

William “Bill” Culverwell died Aug. 8 in Bellevue after suffering a stroke at his Mercer Island home.

He was born in New York City to Anna “Betty” and Victor Culverwell, Irish immigrants from Sligo and Dublin, respectively.

He was raised in Brooklyn and later, New Jersey. After earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Columbia University, he worked as a trust officer for banks in New York, Massachusetts, Texas and finally, Washington.

He married the former Sally Powell in 1961. The couple and their four children moved to Seattle in 1979 and made Mercer Island their home in 1980.

Survivors include daughter Wendy Culverwell, Kennewick, WA; son Allan Culverwell and grandsons Reed and Andy Culverwell, Carnation, WA; daughter Hilary Wilkinson and son-in-law Scott Wilkinson and granddaughter Jayda Wilkinson, Bellingham, WA; and daughter Alison Culverwell and grandson Will Rositzke, Bellingham, WA. He is also survived by his partner, Karen Johnston, Seattle; former wife, Sally Culverwell, and former son-in-law, Mike Rositzke.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his grandson, Robert Allan Rositzke, and sister-in-law, Susan Wright Powell.

A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m., Sept. 12, at East Shore Unitarian Church, B12700 S# 32nd St., Bellevue.
