Gregory Phillip Roberts
May 2, 1964- March 6, 2026
It is with much sadness to share that our brother, Gregory Phillip Roberts (aka “The Kid”, “Sox”, “Bertsie”) passed away on March 6, 2026 on Mercer Island, Washington. Greg was born in Waynesboro, Virginia on May 2, 1964 and spent his younger years in southern California, before moving to Mercer Island in 1976. Greg leaves behind his loving brothers, Jeff (Patty) and David (Lisa), and four nieces and nephews: Rachel, Matt, Abby, and Ethan. He was predeceased by his parents, Gerald and Janet Roberts.
Greg was an avid sports fan and played all sports growing up, but particularly excelled in tennis. He won the AAA high school doubles title in 1982 and continued his competitive tennis career at the University of Portland. After two years at Portland, he transferred to the University of Washington and joined the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity, where he made dozens of great friends that were a part of his life until the end. He graduated in June 1986 after earning a Sociology degree.
Greg was a loyal friend and cared deeply for the relationships he built through a vast network ranging from the tennis community, his fraternity brothers at UW, and the co-ed Seattle softball league – Sauceball. He was inducted into the Sauceball Hall of Foam in 2003, earned the Greg Roberts Award (aka Spirit of Sauceball Award) 26 times, and recruited many players into the league. He made even more friends with anyone who could go toe-to-toe discussing the Huskies, the Mariners, and anything associated with USC. His kind, generous, and loving spirit will live on in our hearts forever and he will be deeply missed.
