Katherine Marie Tate

June 23, 1964- March 31, 2026

Katherine Marie Tate, age 61, passed away on March 31, 2026, while traveling in Mexico—fittingly, in the midst of the kind of adventure she so deeply cherished. Born on June 23, 1964, in Gooding, Idaho, Katherine lived a life defined by curiosity, determination, and an unyielding love for those around her.

She was the beloved daughter of Walter Nelson and Patricia Nelson, and a cherished sister to Walter Jr., Joseph, and John. The bold spirit evident from her earliest days carried her far beyond her small-town beginnings to a life of remarkable accomplishment and global exploration.

Katherine earned her Bachelor’s degree from the University of Idaho and her Master’s degree from the University of Washington. She built a distinguished career as a technology executive, earning respect for her leadership, vision, and relentless pursuit of excellence.

In 1985, Katherine married her high school sweetheart, Freddie Tate, beginning a partnership that would span four decades and countless adventures. Their story, often told with a smile, began when Katherine confidently approached the “new boy” in town and announced it was her birthday and she was finally old enough to date. His simple reply “happy birthday” marked the beginning of a lifelong love story. Together, they built a family grounded in love and shared purpose, raising their children, Nelson and Robin, on Mercer Island, Washington. Katherine was deeply devoted to her family, instilling in her children her guiding words: “Have fun, be safe, make good choices.”

Her passion for life extended far beyond her professional and family roles. She earned a third-degree black belt in karate and explored all seven continents, five oceans, and more than 60 countries, embracing the world’s richness and diversity with wonder and enthusiasm. True to her belief that “traveling is about trying new things,” she pursued every experience wholeheartedly.

Katherine was also a dedicated mentor to women through Seattle University’s Albers School of Business and gave generously of her time through philanthropic work with the local chapter of P.E.O., reflecting her belief in the power of opportunity, and education.

Those who knew her often described Katherine as a force of nature, yet loyal and loving, forming lasting bonds with all who were fortunate enough to share in her life. She would wish to be remembered not just for the places she traveled, but for the spirit in which she lived: encouraging others to broaden their horizons, seek adventure, embrace the unknown, and love fully and without reservation.

She leaves behind a legacy of courage, curiosity, and love that will continue to inspire all who knew her.

She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 22nd, 2026, at St. Joseph Parish, 732 18th Ave E, Seattle, WA. A reception will follow.
