Rotary students of January

Mercer Island High School students Briauna Azer and Aaron Poor have been named as the Rotary Islanders of January.
A captain of the swim, dive and water polo teams at MIHS, Azer has played French horn and mellophone in the band program for eight years. She is the ASB Public Relations Coordinator and advisory secretary, and a member of the Girl Scouts of America, the Service Club and National Honors Society. She has participated in summer church mission trips in the San Francisco Bay area, Lapwai, Idaho; Knoxville, Tenn.; and Portland, Ore. Through planning and leading a service trip to New Orleans, La., she earned a Girl Scout Gold Award. Her outreach around Seattle has included creating a new city mural, planting and harvesting food on a farm to benefit the low-income immigrant population, serving the homeless, sending cards to soldiers in Iraq and volunteering in a seniors’ home. She is the daughter of Ashraf and Kate Azer, and enjoys swimming, photography and painting in her spare time. She plans to study architecture in college.
Poor is the vice president of ASB at MIHS, where he is also a Jewish Club member, Invisible Children Club vice president, Zombie Club president and MI Relay for Life team chair of survivorship. In the community he has served a term as president of the B’nai B’rith Youth Organization and has participated with the Temple Youth Group and Leukemia and Lymphoma’s Pennies for Patients campaign. He is the son of Dean and Geri Poor, and he intends to major in business and marketing in college.
