Islander swim team beats Kentwood

The Mercer Island girls swim and dive team beat out Kentwood in a non-league match, 118-52. The team had seven qualifications for the state meet during the match.
Islanders Grace Wold, Danielle Deiparine, Madeleine Chandless and Jennifer Pak qualified in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1 minute, 54 seconds. Pak then qualified again in the 200-yard freestyle event at 1:57.77, while Wold also earned another qualification in the 200-yard individual medley race with a time of 2:14.14.
Chandless won the 500-yard freestyle event with a time of 5:34.07, and the 200-yard freestyle relay team of Stephanie Hammond, Christina Williamson, Masami Cookson and Pak finished first with a time of 1:46.
The girls team swept the top spots in the 100-yard backstroke race with Wold taking first at 1:00.42, and Kira Godfred finished second at 1:03.90. Both times earned the swimmers a spot at the state meet. Deiparine rounded out her day with a win in the 100-yard breaststroke to qualify for the state meet with a time of 1:11.92. The Islanders’ last win of the meet came in the 400-yard freestyle relay with Pak, Hammon, Chandless and Wold grabbing the win in 3:53.99 to also qualify for the final meet of the season.
The team hosted its final home meet of the regular season on Tuesday, after Reporter deadline, against Bellevue.
